I was keeping an eye on the USA-Algeria World Cup match on my mobile while working.
The 90 minutes of the match were gone. Still knotted at nil-nil. The fourth official signaled
for four minutes of stoppage time. The USA has already had another goal disallowed
because of another horrendous call. And they've just been pounding away at the Algerian
goal all game. Great chance after great chance and the ball simply refuses to get into the
back of the net. Team USA was two minutes away from being sent packing from the World Cup
when Landon Donovan scored in the 91st minute to give the United States the insurmountable
one goal lead that they so richly deserved. Unbelievable.
The World Cup is completely nuts. My emotions went from thinking about how heartbroken
I was going to be if the USA gets bounced out of the World Cup in a couple minutes to
having my eyes well up with tears of joy because not only the USA get the win they deserved
but they also advanced to the second round and somehow finished at the top of their Group.
Absolutely unbelievable.
ps. The call of the goal by the great Andrés Cantor is absolutely brilliant.
